Privacy Policy

Effective 7 October 2026

This policy explains what personal information the AeroHUD mobile app, the aerohud.com website and AeroHUD devices (VariScope, NanoVario) collect, why, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. We collect as little as we need to make the product work. We do not sell your data and we do not show ads.

Who we are

AeroHUD is a trading name of Wildsys (Pty) Ltd, a company registered in South Africa, which is responsible for your personal information (the "responsible party" under POPIA and the "controller" under the GDPR). For any privacy question or request, email aerohud@wildsys.co.za.

What we collect

Your account

  • Name, email address and a securely hashed password, or, if you sign in with Google, the name, email address and profile picture Google shares with us.
  • Sign-in sessions, including the IP address and device or browser type used to sign in, so we can keep you signed in and protect your account.

Your flights

  • When you are signed in, flights downloaded from your VariScope are uploaded to your account automatically; flights recorded on your phone are uploaded only when you choose to. A flight is an IGC file: your GPS track with altitude and timestamps, plus statistics such as duration, distance and climb rate.
  • The serial number and firmware version of the device that recorded it.
  • Flights are private by default. If you make a flight public, anyone with its link can view the track.

Location

The app uses your phone's location while you use it, to run the variometer, record flights, show your position on the map and warn you about nearby airspace. During a flight it keeps working with the screen off, shown by an ongoing notification. Your live position stays on your phone; it is only sent elsewhere as part of a flight you upload, or to the services listed below for the features you use.

Bluetooth devices

The app connects over Bluetooth to AeroHUD devices and accessories (VariScope HUD, NanoVario, airspeed sensor) to show live flight data, change settings and download flights. Bluetooth scanning is not used to work out your location.

The website

  • If you send an enquiry or pre-order request: your name, email, message, the product you're interested in, your language and your approximate country (from your IP address).
  • Cookies: one to remember your language and one to keep you signed in. Google Analytics cookies, which measure how the site is used, are only set if you accept them; you can change your choice any time under Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.

What stays on your phone

Flights recorded on your phone, your settings, downloaded airspace data and cached map place names are stored on your phone and are not uploaded unless described above. Uninstalling the app removes them.

Who we share data with

We use the following service providers. They only receive what they need for the feature involved:

  • Neon (database) and Vercel (website hosting and file storage) store your account and flights.
  • Resend sends emails such as password resets, and forwards website enquiries to us.
  • Google: Google Sign-In, if you use it; Google Analytics on the website, only if you accept analytics cookies (not in the app).
  • Mapbox provides maps. To show where a flight took place, the start and end coordinates of your flights are sent to Mapbox to look up place names, and a simplified track is sent to draw flight preview images. We have turned off Mapbox's usage telemetry in the app.
  • adsb.lol: only if you turn on SkyTracker, your current position is sent every few seconds to fetch nearby aircraft.
  • OpenAIP airspace files are downloaded from Google Cloud Storage; only your country code is sent.
  • Cesium provides 3D terrain for the website's flight viewer.

We may also disclose information if required by law. Our providers may process data outside South Africa, for example in the United States or the European Union, under their own security and privacy commitments.

How long we keep it

  • Your account and flights: until you delete them or delete your account.
  • Website enquiries: until you ask us to delete them.
  • Password-reset links expire shortly after they are sent.
  • Our providers' backups and logs are removed on their own schedules.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account and all of its cloud data at any time, in the app or on the website. See how to delete your account.

Your rights

You can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or object to how we use it, by emailing aerohud@wildsys.co.za. If you're unhappy with our answer, you can complain to South Africa's Information Regulator or to the data protection authority where you live.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS), passwords are stored only as secure hashes, and access to our systems is restricted.

Children

AeroHUD is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Changes

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top, and for significant changes we'll let you know in the app or by email.
